Here's what people usually want to know before deciding to give me a call to talk about setting up some counseling:

Specialties

For all specialties below, Dr. Schmidt has done at least three of the following: received training certification, written a book, done research, taught classes or workshops, or written published newspaper and journal articles.

Love, Marriage and Family Relationships

From clinical research, my professional training, my traditional and biblical values, and from my own personal experience, I know a great deal about healthy love for relationships. I am an expert on single adult dating, and have written a book about this. Marital partnership and romantic intimacy have been passions of mine all my life. I have a large local extended family that celebrates differences together in harmony.

Managing Anxiety, Anger and Depression

I have a variety of techniques I use in the office and homework assignments I give outside the office that are effective in teaching successful, adaptive ways of managing painful emotions. I believe emotions need to be talked out so they are not acted out. In guiding and motivating our behavior, we should believe our beliefs, and feel our feelings.

Addictions: Recovery and Enabling

I have been recovering for over 30 years from an addiction to alcohol, and from my naïve and tragic efforts to fix my loved ones. My recovery did not stop with some variety, but has continued to bless me with serenity, courage and wisdom. I have learned a great deal from working my own 12-step recovery program during these years, and from the counseling I have received to help establish and maintain my recovery period.

Pornography, Infidelity, and Sexual Addiction

My post-doctoral training in treating trauma and addictions has taught me that this culture is rapidly producing epidemic levels of addiction to pornographic and maritally unfaithful behaviors. My shock and dismay that all this is even happening in Christian homes with good marriages has given way to understanding, and I am now armed with the very best methods available for turning these tragic situations around.

Life Coaching and Personal Growth

I love it when my clients or their friends and family come to me to make a good life better. Life coaching does not focus on negative feelings about past failures, but on hopes and efforts toward future goals. It is hard to find role models for the well-balanced life these days, but I have plenty of them. For years I have compiled what I called Brain Food for the Good Life, and you can find them here in my blog, especially in the section on Personal Growth.

My Outdoor Home Office Halfway Between Louisville And Lexington

Video invitation to my outdoor home office. is now for ESTABLISHED CLIENTS during temperate seasons (males and married couples). Feel free to call and ask me more about it. This free-standing office is 50 feet from the back door of my home. We may sit around on its back deck, or during rain, on the front porch, or the screen porch of my home. 100 yards away is what we call the point, with nothing man-made but a clear view in three directions of the horizon 50 miles out. More about Jeptha Knob can be found on its Wikipedia page.

Work with Me from your Home

With God together, we can find and make good things coming out of this bad situation. . . .
Counseling by telephone has long been used to supplement face-to-face counseling in the office. When distance, mobility, health, or transportation is an issue, tele-counseling is a practical alternative to working together in person. Insurance sometimes pays for this form of service. We arrange for my payment in advance, through credit card, HSA, Venmo, or Cash App.
For tele-counseling/videoconferencing sessions, I charge $150 per hour. The first call to me is free, and I'll give a listening ear, then insights and suggestions, for up to 15 to 20 minutes. For those who prefer it, I am set up to do video calls at no extra charge, using FaceTime, Skype, or the extra secure, encrypted, password-protected platform I have purchased for Zoom meetings. Take advantage of tele-counseling to save time, money, and save your health.

Zoom and Facetime sessions

People who live in Kentucky and southern Indiana can see me without leaving their homes, through video conferencing. This is sometimes called teletherapy. I prefer to do that over the very private, securely encrypted format of Zoom. But for an easier and quicker connection that is less secure, I am also happy to do telephone sessions, or FaceTime conferences. These sessions can be scheduled most any weekday and weeknight, and they are less expensive by $10 per hour, $160 versus $170.
